Product details

This book is a continuation of the series from Phaidon that has also included books on brick, concrete and wood. It featured more than 170 structure that are made from this building material. It includes Neolithic monuments and the epic pyramids of Giza as well as the work of twentieth-century architects =such as Mies van der Rohe and Marcel Breuer. The book demonstrates the versatility of this building material as well as the very essence of it.

The book is arranged to promote comparison and discussion so the iconic Trulli of Puglia in the South of Italy are shown next to a holiday home in Bosnia and Herzegovina, both of which utilise the insulating properties of brick to provide some relief from the heat. In the section 'texture' the contrasting smooth and rough properties of stone, as well as its ability to take carved decoration are exhibited in photographs of Peter Zumthor's spa in Vals and the decorated columns of Durham Cathedral.

Hardback. 224 pages.
