Much derided and still subject to demands that they be torn down, some social housing from the 60s and 70s should still be regarded as a model for how the council house can do much better than simply provide a much needed roof over heads.

This book looks at 68 of London’s most iconic council estates and reminds the reader of the pride, thought and innovation that went into designing these socially vital buildings. It includes examples that are already well-known and well-regarded (Trellick Tower and the Golden Lane Estate) but also shines a light on other developments such as the Brunel Estate in Westminster and the Arden Estate in Hackney.

Undoubtedly the photography might not be focussed on the elements of these buildings which might not be photogenic but it doesn’t idealise them either.
