It is made from the fine, so-called "toquilla straw" of the disc flower plant (Carludovica palmata, also "Panama hat plant") and is not to be confused with the pintao traditionally worn in Panama. The Panama hat has been made in the provinces of Manabí and Azuay in Ecuador since 1630.
