In 2020 The Reverend Richard Coles' partner, David, died. In this memoir Richard recalls the period of his death, the time leading up to it and the weeks afterwards. It's not a manual for dealing with grief but more a frank exploration of one person's experience of it. The mundane (s)admin that needs to take place, the ability or inabliity of others to deal with the circumstances that he found himself in, and the relief that in a way he found from David's death.

The bombshell of David's alcohol addiction come part way through the book and Richard also explains how his disease coloured both of their lives. It is a book that should resonate with everyone as, if we haven't encountered the death of someone close to us yet, there is no doubt that we will have to at some point.
