Eat What You Grow - Alys Fowler
Alys Fowler is the gardening correspondent for the Guardian Weekend magazine. Her weekly column there deals with all manner of plant and gardening related issues. She also wrote a really great memoir called Hidden Nature.
This book proposes a way of gardening where edible plants are incorporated into gardens, rather than being the sole preserve of allotments and kitchen gardens. All of the plants that Fowler has incorporated into this book have been selected so that they hold their own not just in a garden but on the plate. Fowler suggests that it is far less time consuming to garden alongside nature rather than being a chore that includes constant weeding and back-breaking digging.
The book sets out the argument for gardening in this way in the introductory pages and then splits into subsequent sections. The Basics section lists perennial plants that will make up the backbone of the garden, this is followed by Fillers which will weave through and around the perennials and finally she has a section called Toppings which contains some of the more traditional annual vegetables that might need to be sown inside and cared for to get the best out of them.
