I Used to Live Here Once – Miranda Seymour
Jean Rhys found widespread acclaim through her book Wide Sargasso Sea, published in 1966; a blazing book that imagined the life of Antoinette Crossley before she became the wife of Mr Rochester in Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre. Her reputation was based on this one book although she wrote others and also wrote copious letters. She was an obsessive and troubled genius.
In Seymour’s book she researches and writes of the crucial seventeen years that Rhys spent lioving on the remote Caribbean island of Dominica; the island which hauntyed Rhys’s mind and her work for the rest of her life.
Rhys was a fiercely proud and independent character who experienced tragedy and poverty, alcohol and drug dependency and romantic and sexual turmoil but who was never a victim. She emerges from Seymour’s book as someone who self absorbed and unpredicatable but also fascinating and funny.
