Angelica Kauffman
This is the catalogue for the exhibition at the Royal Academy. That exhibition runs from March 1st through to June 30th.
Kauffman (1741-1807) had a brilliant and cosmopolitan career as a pioneer of history painting and portraiture. She was one of only two women who were among the founding membership of the Royal Academy in 1768. Her work was admired and collected by queens and emperors from across the continent.
As a painter of historical allegory, many of Kauffman's scenes deal with characters from classical stories and myth. Her depictions of these scenes were often borrowed by craftspeople working in other disciplines and appear on enamels for pocket watches and other similar disciplines.
