Indian Tiles - Arthur Millner
This is the follow up title to Arthur Millner's celebrated book Damascus Tiles that was published in 2015. In this new book his research and search takes him further East from his previous arena to the architectural tiles from sultanate and mughal India and Pakistan.
Some of the tiles have survived in-situ and yet more have survived but now lie in museum collections far from their original place of origin. Millner makes the case for tiles from this region being one of the richest and most under-appreciated, of Indian art forms, with a bewildering array of colours, designs and techniques. The primarily blue, white and green tiles that dominated the Damascus tiles from Arthur's first book give way here to a palette that incorporates yellows and reds alongside the greens and blues.
The book is set out chronologically, uncovering the development of the practice of how the tiles were made, how they were deployed and the stylistic influences across the timeline of the book. The stunning images in the book contain many shots of the few tiles remaining in place where they were first located and also the ones that now exist in collections worldwide such as the ones at the V&A and the Art Institute of Chicago. At the back of the book is a full catalogue of such tiles where you can see in isolation the stunning work and motifs.
