Birdgirl – Mya-Rose Craig

Birdgirl is the name by which Mya-Rose Craig became known. She’s a 20-year-old British-Bangladeshi birder and environmentalist. She’s also a campaginer for equal access to nature.

Her tale is not just one of ornithology – though she first rose to prominence by being the youngest ever person to see more than half of the world’s knopwn bird species. Mya-Rose’s father had been a bird watcher from childhood while her mother had no interest in them. Through the book Craig explains how the shared interest of her father and herself becomes a framework for the family to spend time together and for them to support her mother through her bad mental health. It is through birding that they managed to find joy.

While the reader might not know the minute differences between some of the birds that Craig spots, the enthusiasm that she has for them and for seeing them is completely infectious.
