The book The Archipelago of the House, published by Le Lézard Noir, offers us a selection of houses by Japanese architects. The 384-page book is made up of two parts: In the first part, the authors present a selection of 14 houses from the 20th century. These houses, recognized as masterpieces of Japanese architecture of the last century, lay the foundations for the evolution of the house in Japan. In the second part, 20 contemporary houses are presented and explained as case studies of the evolution of the housing issue in Japan. Using photos, plans, and interviews, the authors explain the design of these houses. In an educational manner, the authors explain to us how these houses meet the needs of the clients (residents). This book is illustrated by the magnificent photographs of Jérémie Souteyrat. The authors of this architectural work started from the observation that the houses of Japanese architects are often misunderstood and they are intriguing both by their forms and by a kind of race for novelty. Through the case studies presented in the book, they wanted to allow us to better understand the design and thinking that goes into the construction of houses in Japan.
