From the Scottish Highlands to the clandestine punk clubs, the tartan has established itself as part of the subcultural uniform. Originally used as a symbol of the user's clan, the design of paintings used to mean the life of the nobility and the long and noble inheritance of the user. It was adopted in street clothes a couple of centuries later for very different reasons: two metaphorical fingers for the establishment. Today it still forms a key part of Fred Perry's uniform.
