This book is subtitled A memoir of art and life & sudden death. The thunderclap of the title is the explosion of gunpowder in 1654 that devastated the city of Delft. Among the fatalities of that accident was Carel Farbritius. Aged on thirty-two when he died he left one masterpiece of a painting The Goldfinch and barely a dozen other known paintings.
Cumming's book is part biographty of Fabritius but also explres the relationship between art and life. The author interweaves her own life and that of her painter father with the great artists of the Dutch Golden Age.
