Vermeer

The Vermeer exhibition at the Rijksmuseum is by all accounts a veritable blockbuster. Laura Cumming referred to it in her review for The Guardian as "one of the most thrilling exhbitions ever conceived". There are 37 known Vermeer paintings and 28 of them are in this exhibition.

This book has been published by Thames & Hudson to accompany the exhibition. For an artist who made such a limited number of works the book is necessarily full of not just full plates of the works but also plenty of detail shots. The detail photographs are remarkable; revealing the masterly handling of paint and composition.

There are also several insightful essays in the book.

As Taco Dibbits (director of the Rijksmuseum) writes in the forword "Vermeer's paintings make an indelible impression. The intimate restraint of his work makes time stand still for a moment in a world that is moving at such relentless pace."

Hardback. 320 pages.
