Product details

Over a period of just under 10 years, from 1986 forward, the artist and filmaker Derek Jarman and his partner Keith Collins created a home and sanctuary at Prospect Cottage, Dungeness. The house is built on shingle from the nearby beach and is on a dead end road that leads to a power station. The garden that Jarman and Collins made has become iconic and influential, having had to deal with both the vaguely inhospitable ground conditions but also the gawping of passers by!

After Jarman's death in 1994 Collins hung net curtains at the windows of Prospect Cottage to shield their home from the eyes of garden visitors. In 2018 the photographer Gilbert McGarragher was asked to photograph and document the house interior and those photographs are shown here. The diminutive house is revealed room by room along with a reflective essay that reveals the history of the cottage and the experience of photographing it.
