The Beauty of Time
Written by François Chaille and Dominique Fléchon this book looks at the history of the timekeeper from the Cathedral clocks of medieval Europe to precision watchmaking in the Age of Enlightenment, concluding with the wristwatch of our modern times. Throughout, there is an emphasis on the timekeeper as a work of art, paintings from the Renaissance such as still lifes depicting clocks and watches help to conjure the historical periods. The cover illustration, a painting by Reubens from 1597, is especially arresting and shows a young Gentleman proudly displaying his latest state of the art 16th century gadgetry - his watch.
Published in 2018 by Flammarion in association with the FHH (Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie, Switzerland). Foreword by Franco Cologni.
