Tokachi Millennium Forest - Dan Pearson & Midori Shintani
If you follow the work of Dan Pearson then you will be familiar with at least the name of the Tokachi Millennium Forest. It is a huge landscape and garden project in Japan where Dan Pearson has overseen the design and planting and which is maintained by a team of gardeners led by Midori Shintani.
The vision for the garden started 30 years ago when Mitsushige Hayashi set out to make his newspaper business carbon neutral and one of the parts of this equation was the creation of the Millennium Forest to be "a garden for a thousand years". The Hayashi family settled in Hokkaido in 1897 and the families deep attachment to the land there meant that by the 2000 they had amassed enough land for this garden project. He wanted more Japanese people to be engaged with the natural environment and Pearson has helped them with the huge scale of this project.
Interspersed with Dan's sections Midori Shintani gives an insight into Japanese culture and its intersection with nature and gardening. The reverence for cherry blossom is well known but she also talks about nature worship, the work of the team at Tokachi and the productive gardens within the forest.
