Gli studi dell'artista sono luoghi divertenti; Non esiste un testo impostato su come sono o dovrebbero essere proprio perché non esiste un diktat prescritto su cosa sia e può essere l'arte. Nei miei anni di gestire gli studi di artisti a Londra significa che ho visto sia la vernice schizzata, versioni caotiche sia le versioni incontaminate con cura. Quelli in cui l'artista quasi abita lo spazio per 24 ore al giorno e quelli in cui lavorano a fianco di altri praticanti, godendosi la comapnione e la capacità di rimbalzare le idee reciproche.
James Hall esplora lo studio dell'artista come un luogo che può essere un'utopia e un luogo associato a un lavoro sporco e di rottura. La sua storia culturale rivela il mito e la realtà dello spazio creativo dall'antica Grecia ai giorni moderni come documentato attraverso la descrizione scritta e anche attraverso la pittura, la fotografia, la ceramica dipinta e altro ancora. Hall colloca lo studio all'interno di un ricco contesto culturale, politico e sociale con l'obiettivo di correggere un'imbanza che ha trascurato da tempo gli artigiani che hanno collaborato con artisti.
Tra i famosi artisti i cui studi discute ci sono Leonardo da Vinci, Artemisia Gentileschi, Claude Monet e Diego Rivera.
