DESCRIPTION:

This Japanese woodblock print was made by Yoshu Chikanobu, a great artist of Japan’s Meji period. It represents a kabuki play of the poisoning of the great Japanese warrior Kato Kiyomasa (1562-1611).

Legend tells that the great warrior was requested at the shogun’s (military dictator of Japan) castle and was offered a cup of wine. He knew it was poisoned but out of loyalty, he drank it.

On the print, we can see the actor Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Kiyomasa. He is sitting on a stall back at his castle, prepared to die. Next to him, we see his famous battle helmet and behind him, the banner that he always carried with him into battle as a talisman. It has a Buddhist inscription that says “Praise to the Lotus Flower of the everlasting secret teachings”.
